Wonderment
is owned and run by partners Lisa MacMartin, Zuzanne Fenner
and Joyce Olson-Kapell. We met when our children attended
a local Waldorf School, volunteering for school fundraisers,
including the annual Holiday Fair. We also helped run
the school's gift shop. As Lisa and Zuzanne's children prepared
to graduate and move on to different schools, we realized
we wanted to keep working together to create a business of
our own.

Our varied backgrounds have
suited us well for our business start up. Lisa has worked
extensively in various aspects of retail business, Zuzanne
is a business consultant and accountant, and Joyce is studying
to become a Waldorf teacher.

We
worked on our business plan for many months, brainstorming
our store name and concept. Then in the late spring of
2005, Cindy Smedberg of the Linden Hills House of Music
was chatting with Zuzanne at their sons' school and mentioned
that the store she shared space with was moving out and
that our store would be a perfect compliment to her music
school. We signed our lease in late June 2005 and
began getting the store ready to open.
Wonderment is in
the 1909 building that was originally Hawkinson's Grocery. We painted the walls
and the tin ceiling, improved the lighting, installed
a new floor and built a wonderful treehouse. Joyce's husband
built wooden shadow boxes for our window display and we
found a number of useful shelving units at a store that
was closing. On September 6, 2005, Wonderment opened for
business.
